AS WE LIVE; AS WE GROW: FILM
For a film I made for my digital art class, I had to appropriate media into my own creation. For my appropriation project I chose the theme of life. I chose to touch on the meaning of life due to the large room for interpretation. The meaning of life is different for everyone, creating the viewers to take the video in an individual meaning, almost appropriating it all over again, just like artist Richard Prince. Along with interpretation, I chose this theme to focus on the irony of appropriating video with the themes of "Life" due to talking about individual creation, yet taking someone else's work.
I chose different clips from movies, short films, time lapses and media from the web. Holding Prince’s ideas of slight change in mind, I chose specific pieces that meant something personal to me, but that I did not create myself. I chose moving images that connect with me on an emotional level to create something intimate, but appropriating the original work.
It was tough shortening the piece into around half a minute. I really wanted to explore more pieces and create even more of a story, but focusing on appropriation was the main focus. It became easy to get lost in someone else work and forget that this is not your creating from step one.
OUT THERE: GRAPHITE & PAPER
This sketch touches on the perspective of the world. The tiny planet represents what we may know, and the astronaut represents us and our future curiosity. We have so much more to discover, and what we know has barely even touched the surface.
The significance of this collection is to approach the world from a different viewpoint.
